Welcome to GL Academy, Mont Kiara’s Premier Education Centre
Today, we’d like to talk about English education for students currently enrolled in British international schools in Malaysia (IGCSE & A-Level).
While many students focus diligently on subjects like Math and Science, English is often overlooked.
Just because a student can communicate with friends and teachers in English doesn’t necessarily mean their English proficiency is where it should be.
Based on our TOEFL, IELTS, and in-house English placement tests, many parents are shocked by the actual scores their children receive.
Particularly for students who have lived in Malaysia for years, verbal communication may be fluent, but weaknesses are often found in writing, reading, and logical reasoning.
💡 English proficiency is not just about grammar or writing
British international schools expect far more than just correct grammar and structured essays.
Skills like critical thinking, logic, and background knowledge — commonly referred to as soft skills — play a central role in academic success.
Subjects such as English, Global Perspectives, Geography, and Psychology all require these skills. Even in science subjects, students are expected to apply their understanding logically and reflectively.
We’ve seen many students lose marks not because they misunderstood concepts, but because they couldn’t express or apply them logically in exam scenarios.
💬 Why are soft skills so important?
According to official guidelines from Cambridge International (CAIE), IGCSE and A-Level assessments are not based solely on memorization.
Instead, they evaluate critical thinking, analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities.
- 📌 In Global Perspectives, students are required to analyze multiple viewpoints and build logical arguments — not just summarize facts.
- 📌 In Biology and Chemistry, applying knowledge to real-world scenarios is a core component of scoring well (application-based thinking).
- 📌 Additionally, CAIE explicitly states that essential skills for future academic and career success include communication, collaboration, and self-management.
In short, fluency in English is not enough. What truly matters is the student’s ability to think, reason, and express themselves effectively — skills that influence success across all subjects.
✨ Introducing GL Academy’s Global Learners English (GLE) Program
To address this need, GL Academy offers the Global Learners English (GLE) program, designed specifically for international school students.
✔ Suitable for British, American, and IB curricula
✔ Focuses on all four English skills + debate, critical thinking, general knowledge, and essay structure
✔ Helps improve performance in other subjects by building soft skills
👉 Many of our GLE students not only saw improvements in their English grades,
but also performed better in science, history, and other subjects.
Students who achieve A*/A grades in IGCSE often share common traits: strong thinking skills and a wide base of knowledge.
The GLE program is led by Ms. Sacha Tracy Roux, a qualified international school teacher with over 10 professional certifications and extensive teaching experience.
